New Year, new closet. It’s that time of year when we start compulsively organizing all our junk. This year, I started with my closet (no surprise there). I took 7 large bags of clothes to donate (I tried Plato’s closet but they never take much). Spoiler alert- my closet is still way too full! But, I am learning more and more that basic pieces make my wardrobe more versatile and wearable. As I’ve discussed before, my color is black. I’m a winter and cooler colors flatter me way more than warmer ones (I’ve finally settled on my color season, check out this post to determine yours).

My basic formula for my winter stay at home mom life is neutral top, jacket, denim or leggings, and solid shoes (I’m featuring my Time Slippers but I’ll talk more about that later). I occasionally swap a cotton dress for the typical denim and tee wear but keep it casual with some slip ons.

The thing is, most people only wear about 20% of their wardrobe regularly. So, why hold onto that extra stuff. I think as minimalism gains popularity, people are seeing just how freeing it is to focus on things they love and let go of the rest.

Here are some of my top tips for tidying up your closet this year:

  • 1. Keep a donate pile going. When I get dressed, I occasionally will try on a piece I’m on the fence about. If I put it on and feel the least bit uncomfortable it goes into the donate bin. Every month or two I take my pieces to Good Will, get my tax receipt, and feel a little less bogged down by stuff.
  • 2. Don’t be afraid to return things. If you buy a piece and you don’t wear or want to wear it for weeks, it’s probably not fitting your lifestyle for whatever reason. So take it back! Don’t clutter your life with clearance buys because it was “only $5.”
  • Jacket: Aventura Clothing; Basic Black Tee: c/o LA Made; Boots: c/o Jambu

  • 3. Choose a basic uniform that fits your lifestyle. I’m a stay at home mom. I love dresses and dressing up. However, wearing a maxi to go to the grocery store isn’t always practical. What I wear the most are denim and leggings with casual tops. So, that is the basis of my wardrobe. Summer adds another dimension and I can add in some casual dresses to the daily rotation. Knowing what you wear will help you streamline your closet, which saves you time (who wants to organize all those extra clothes?), space, and money.
  • Jacket: (old) c/o Aventura Clothing; Top: old; Faux Leather Leggings: Target; Boots: c/o Bearpaw (use code BPAMBJF for 20% off your purchase)

  • 4. Make a list of what you need/want. Evaluate your closet and what you wear. Then, make yourself a list of things you would like to own (do you need more basic tops, cardigans, jeans, or sneakers?). Then, when the Target clearance rack strikes, you know what you need and will be less tempted by that $3 tee that will just be forgotten at the bottom of the pile.
  • Jacket: Aventura Clothing; Striped Top: c/o LA Made; Cardigan: c/o LA Made; Boots: c/o Comfortiva

Bonus tip: Invest in quality basics. Splurge on denim and shoes. Invest in decent tees and a cardigan or two. Treat your pieces the way they deserve- wash separately on the gentle cycle (don’t over fill your machine). Yes, this takes a little extra effort in the short run for a long term payout of clothing that holds up. My favorite basics right now are Madewell denim and tops by LA Made (classic pieces, produced ethically in US based factories).

While you’re tidying up your house, don’t forget to invest a little time in your closet. Building a new you, may look like a whole lot of investing in the you you already are and a trip into your own closet.

    1. I love the idea of capsule wardrobes but I’m not a minimalist and I love to have a variety in my wardrobe. 🙂 xx
