Dress: c/o Eshakti (similar, similar); Trench Coat: c/o Thacker NYC; Wedges: SAS Shoes; Handbag: Baby Joey

What I wouldn’t give to be able to afford couture. But, it’s not affordable and it’s not practical either (let’s face it, most couture isn’t exactly wearable). That’s why I’ve been eyeing Eshakti for a while. It’s customizable fashion at an affordable price. I mean, it’s not couture (and maybe that’s a good thing because it’s fashion you can wear) but it is tailored and you can create a piece that’s just as unique as you are.

When I saw this dress and the pockets (have I mentioned how much I love pockets? Once or twice maybe?), I knew it needed to live in my closet. I actually loved it as it was on the website as a tank but I’m going to get real for a minute, I don’t love my upper arms. While the style looked amazing as a tank dress, I decided to select the short sleeved option, and I’m glad I did. Though I didn’t feel the need to for this dress, you can also choose to adjust the length (mini or maxi or somewhere in between) and the neckline. If you really want a tailored look, provide your measurements and get a garment that is sure to fit.

This dress care of Eshakti gives me all the retro 50s pinup feels but it’s so comfortably functional. Going retro can leave you feeling like you’re going to a costume party but this is a fashion fad you can embrace if you do it right. Here’s what I look for when going retro.

  1. Keep it Classic with a twist. Look for timeless shapes and designs. This full skirt, high waisted look is very much in right now just as it was in the 50s. Being that this look is flattering on so many shapes and sizes, you can be sure it’s not going anywhere anytime soon. For the twist, the utility pockets on this dress give you a little throw back to aprons of old.

  2. Stay in the neutrals. Keeping the colors neutral is key to throw back fashion. A pop of color here and there works (especially with florals) but to stay on the safe side, go black, tan, navy, or olive. Other shades may come and go but these four colors will never be out of style.

  3. Mod up the accessories. While it may be tempting to go 50s head to toe, a new pair of shoes or handbag in timeless style will keep you comfortable in the now.

Speaking of comfort, I’m loving these peep toes by SAS Shoes. Talk about classic. The nude color makes them very fresh for the season but the wedge design compliments the retro look beautiful. Has anyone else fallen in love with the re-emergence of mid century style footwear? The thing I love about them is they look perfect with a throwback dress like this but can dress up a pair of skinnies in a pinch. I have so many plans for these shoes. I’ve been dying for a pair of nude heels (the wedge is just a bonus as it provides even support, which is good for a mama on the run). Thank you, San Antonio Shoemakers for making all my shoe dreams come true this year (see this post for how they completed my collection of flats). Comfortable foot candy? Yes, please.

Before I run (in my adorably comfortable shoes;), I want to point out my handbag. Hold onto your seats for a minute because it’s actually a diaper bag. When I had my last baby, I wanted a bag that didn’t look like a diaper bag. It wasn’t an easy search. I had to buy online…from Australia! So you don’t know how pumped I was when busy mama of two, Candice, reached out to me to share her luxury compact baby bag. If there’s one thing I love as much as fashion, it’s finding growing businesses to support. Stay tuned for a more in-depth look at this amazing Baby Joey bag when the Kickstarter opens up end of April (you can get 20% off retail if you preorder- supporting another mom and get a deal? Where do I sign up? I’ll let you know more soon).

No matter what style you wear this Spring: Classic, neutral, with a modern twist will never steer you wrong.

PS This outfit really has me feeling like the Marvelous Mrs Maisel– and she may be the inspiration for these mid century feels. I watched the premier episode when it first came out (don’t you hate how amazon does that to you- gives you a tiny taste and then says just kidding). It left me wanting more, and those adorable curls. I still haven’t figured out the 50s hair, but I think this dress and trench hit the nail on the head of mid century style. Have you watched the series yet? I definitely recommend giving it a peek even if it’s just for the fabulous fashion!

  1. That skirt is to die for and I dont wear skirt often. I would totally rock that one! And the diaper bag would be used even if I didn’t have a baby!
