One of the hottest trends this summer is stripes. Stripes are literally everywhere. I can’t turn around without instagramming over a whole lot of them. My favorite trend happens to be the vertical stripe but I’m learning to embrace all the fun things a well designed horizontal stripe can do too.

I know you’re shaking your head right now “horizontal stripes? No, thank you.” But, give me a minute. Let’s take a look at ways to jump on this trend for summer 2017.

Here are my tips for choosing a good striped piece this summer:

Dress: c/o Pink Blush

Shoes: Franco Sarto, similar

1. Go skinny: Up or down, left or right, just make sure they’re thin or at least mixed widths. Thin stripes whether vertical or horizontal are going to give you a slimmer look.

2. Vertical: Are you short waisted? Me too. Give you and me some length with an elongating stripe.

3. Spice up the hemline or neckline: Keep it interesting with a different design. Another popular theme this summer is off the shoulder and I feel like it’s to die for when paired with a good stripe. Stripes may have been around as long as the dress itself, but add them to an asymmetrical hem and you’ve rocked a classic look.

Bonus tip: not sure how to break up a striped maxi? Grab one of your little girl’s elastics and tie a small knot of fabric at the waist. Gives you more definition without a belt or any fabric wrinkling knots.
