Love Grows Roots

As an adult, every day is like Christmas (I’m talking the part where we play Santa and stay up half the night working on making sure every perfect detail is executed magically). And, according to my UPS guy, it’s always Christmas at my house (because I’m addicted to online shopping- minimalism is a work in progress). I never know exactly what I ordered during a semi comatose feeding at 3 am (moms you know what I’m talking about). That said, who doesn’t love getting surprises in the mail? That’s part of what makes subscription boxes so popular. But, with so many to choose from how do you narrow it down? For me, it’s about choosing companies who really care about the products they send out. That’s why I have a short list of favorites (you can check out my pick for couples and for education). I love to shop small and support real families when I can. When I opened my first box, I immediately knew this was made for me. First off, the box was personally curated. Christina from Growing Roots personally reached out to find out my favorite colors and bath salts vs bomb (haven’t jumped on the bath bomb craze quite yet so I appreciated the choice. It felt like the perfect personal touch and got me excited about what was coming.

Each item is from a small shop and the box includes a small brochure introducing each company. I love that my bath salts and laundry soap were made with real ingredients. I have sensitive skin and my nose can’t take artificial fragrances. I didn’t find any of those in my box- just products with essential oils that baby Hey J thought smelled good enough to eat (really, he kept trying to, check out my live unboxing here). 

Another reason I love Growing Roots Box is that not only do they support small businesses with their boxes, but they also donate a book to a child in need with each subscription. Charity is important to me and so is reading. I love that you can support small shops, growing families, and charity all in one place. 

As a mom, I spend a lot of time pampering my kids, sprinkling them and my husband with thoughtful outings and gifts. Do you ever wonder why someone would start up a new business in this crazy competitive world? Me too. So, I sat down with Growing Roots creator, Christina Lindberg and we chatted a little about the whys, ifs, and, well, ands, of growing a small business (no pun intended;).

Mommy in Flats: Why did you decide to start a subscription box service? 

Christina: My little sister was expecting last May and it gave me the idea to help new moms. I left my career as a high school counselor when my kids were 1 and 3. Now that they are both in school, I was able to dedicate the time to starting the Growing Roots Box. Using the skills from my counseling and teaching degree + raising 2 kids, I want to support moms that are starting their motherhood journey.

MiF: Why is shopping small important to you? 

Christina: I support small shops because most are moms looking for flexibility to raise their family. I want to support moms through my Growing Roots Box or by purchasing from moms. Also, I love the unique and one-of-a kind items that you can’t find anywhere else.

MiF: Why did you choose literacy as your special charity mission? 

Christina: As a teacher, I know that reading is vital to a great education. I want to help children that don’t have a lot of access to books. Actually, when I started, the first box had books and I may add this option back in the future. 

MiF: When you began Growing Roots, who did you have in mind? 

Christina: When I started, I had in mind new parents or beginning families, like my little sister. As we’ve grown, the box has been more for toddler to elementary age. In the future, I would like to have options for the different ages (0-2, 3-6,) so that I can provide the right products for the different developmental stages.
