I could have titled this “How to Wear a Sheer Top Two Ways” but I feel like that’s pretty boring. Plus, this post is more about how the shoes make an outfit than anything else. These looks are mostly from Target (black layering cami from Costco- very soft and seamless and super affordable- find it in store). When you focus on basic pieces, you can really wear them so many ways (this top could dress up jeans or look chic over a dress with the tail knotted). I’m a huge fan of versatility in the wardrobe. The other main point of these outfits was to show you how to wear all black with a touch of holiday sparkle. Adding luxe textures like velvety shoes and faux fur also add a winter holiday touch without making it holiday specific. I’ve done the holiday vibrant clothing thing before but I always end up wearing it once. Then, it hangs in my closet until I give it away. Do yourself and your closet a favor and use accessories to make your looks Christmas ready (this is a theme for my blog this year so get ready to see a whole lot of black).

How to wear Black for Christmas:

  1. With a standout shoe. Adding a shoe with elegant details can change the whole feel of your outfit. I love the criss cross detailing on the Rumson ballet flat and the provocative cutouts on the Samantha heels from Jambu. Both add a little sophistication to basic black looks. (Head over here to win your very own shoes from Jambu with this easy enter giveaway!)

  2. A touch of red. Adding a touch of red to your look makes it instantly Christmas ready. I love to add some lipstick but a hair accessory, bright jewelry, or a festive scarf works too.

  3. Just add fur. I’m obsessed with faux fur. I’ve had this infinity scarf for several years now and I never tire of wearing it. Other ways to add a little fluff include vests (like this one from Aventura), hats, or coats. If you’re not into fur, texturize with velvet or leather (I love these faux leather Spanx dupes for $16). Texturizing your outfit adds dimension even when you’re dressed head to toe in one single color.

  4. Sparkle. This is my absolute favorite way to make an outfit stand out. I got this bedazzled collar from TJ Maxx and I have to be honest- it’s heavy. I’m not sure it’s meant to live in my jewelry box but it was fun to test it out. These bracelets c/o Arely Designs, on the other hand, basically live on my wrist right now. They add a little color to my newly acquired monotone look.

If you, too, can’t swallow the idea of forking our $$$ for an ugly sweater you’ll wear once, think outside the (beautifully wrapped) box and keep your wardrobe basic, versatile, and most of all wearable. Shiny paper may look good but in the end, you just throw it away.

In other news, I’ve been feeling a bit of the winter blues already. It’s been a little dreary around here and maybe I’m wearing my mood. Does anyone else feel a little dull in the winter months? I’m happy to have this little blog to keep me focused and little feet to keep me on my (perfectly coiffed- thanks Jambu) toes.

If you need a little cold weather lift, head over to Instagram to win a pair of shoes of your choice from Jambu– it doesn’t get much better than shoes for Christmas.

Thank you Jambu for gifting these Rumson ballet flats the most comfortable flats for women.

  1. I love your new focus on black and the idea of making what I have in my closet Christmas ready vs buying something that I will likely wear only once or twice. Brilliant! BTW – I totally entered the giveaway, because I NEED those black lace shoes!!

  2. Jamie you look amazing! You make all black look like a million bucks! I love it! I’ll have to bring out my black clothes and put something together too ?. Feeling super inspired! Although, this time of year, I’m going to have to be a bit more bundled-up. We are in full winter mode complete with snow everywhere!

I’m sorry to hear that the winter blues have found you. I really hope that you have awesome self-care activities to go to in order to help. And people to lean on if you need it ♡. You are absolutely not alone! A lot of people feel that way throughout the winter. The cold weather and lack of sunshine can really get to us. Sending Tons of love and hoping for a short winter for you ?.

    1. Yeah I don’t think it helped that it’s been so gloomy this year already. I’m starting to embrace the weather- I do really love cold weather fashion so that helps! It’s in the 30s and 40s now here too. It goes up and down in Virginia though. Your article this week really helped remind me of all the ways I can turn my winter weather frown upside down! Thanks for being so inspiring ❤️❤️❤️
